You could stay with steel until you get arcanium, but I like to be not as squishy, so I go ahead and get durium, but I don't upgrade the durium. Otherwise you'll pretty much stuck farming 15 brown life force pieces every single run into the Mellow Hills. That's pretty much all you can farm at the moment, if you already got your mistress you can go to heavens peak where you will find a huge herd of sheep (about 25-30) nestled right next to your spawn point to your right down a small slope.
